Shanghai, called "Hu" for short, is a bustling metropolis located at the mouth of the Yangtze River. Connected with Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces in the west, the city is exposed to the East China Sea in the east. With a total area of 6,341 square kilometers (about 2,448 square miles), Shanghai takes its place among the world's biggest, most booming urban areas.
Shanghai also enjoys a delightful climate with four distinct seasons. Annual temperatures average 16 C and annual rainfall averages 1200 millimeters. However, spring and autumn, with their moderate temperate, are the best times to visit Shanghai.
The total population is around 15 million, of which around eight million live in the city proper. There is a huge floating population of itinerant workers, probably numbering two million. The foreign population probably numbers around 70,000.
Shanghai is China's largest city, its largest port and its largest industrial base. It is also the heaven for shopping and catering.

Jing An is one of the most prosperous commercial districts in Shanghai, and Nanjing Road is the quintessence of the district, with more than one million persons flowing in and out of the district daily. Starting from the beginning of 1993, the Nanjing Road area in Jing An has been placed under a large-scale comprehensive development. For years in the Nanjing Road area there have emerged a numder of "distinctive streets" which serve as "bridges of commerce", thereby enhancing the radiative role of Jing An's commerce.

The land-use right of the plot at No.433 Yan'an Zhong Road transferred with payment in June 1992 serves as an indicator for the start-up of the real estate trade in Jing An District. Up to March 1994, the leasing of 21 plots of land has been approved with a total area of 20.8 hectares, available for conditions of the local residents have been thus ameliorated. The real estate trade has become a hot spot of investment for both domestic and overseas people, and formed a new growth sector and pillar business of Jing An's economy.

Jing An also has plenty of theatrical bodies and cultural halls. Domestic and international exchanges of cultural activities are frequent. Large-scale cultural events such as Jing An Art Festival, Jing An Folk Culture Festival, etc. provided a vast stage for Chinese and foreign cultures, nationalities culture and folk culture.

By 2010, Jing An will occupy a dominant position in the urban construction of Shanghai, a symbol of new Shanghai in the 21st century.
